Out of Nowhere

Dear Friends,

My book Nils Karsten: Out of Nowhere is out. It was made together with the German publishing house Snap Collective – one of the publishers visited my studio, loved the work and encouraged me to pursue this project with them. What began as a collaborative endeavor has become a beautifully crafted book, showcasing my work from the past 25 years.

For me, collage is more than a technique – it’s a way of thinking. Cut-out images on graphite-grounded surfaces or grids open up fluid spaces where reality, imagination and associations intertwine. My love for images drives a process that takes unexpected turns across mediums: hand-carved woodblocks, printmaking, collage and graphite on paper. In my studio, a woodblock is both a tool and a sculpture, a print sparks a painting, and a collage turns into an installation. I reclaim pop culture and bring together personal images, religious iconography and historical photos. In both my woodcuts and my collages, disparate images collide, shift and merge – ultimately playing out a myth. This book brings all of that together in one place.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has ordered the book – and to all of you who supported this project along the way. It means a lot to me.

If you would like a copy, it is available directly from Snap Collective for €129, printed on demand.

Nils
